About our Wool Handling Courses

Some of New Zealand’s most successful farmers, business people (including Prime Ministers), started their careers in the wool shed. With WOMOlife you can learn skills that can have you travelling the world and earning good money from an early age.

Whether you’re fresh out of high school or already working on the farm, it’s never been easier to learn and develop your skills in wool handling. We’re bringing the classroom to the shearing shed, where you’ll build a range of industry-relevant skills to impress your current or potential employer.

As long as you have a stable internet connection, you’ll be ready to learn remotely. Depending on the level of learning required, you can choose either a Certificate of Completion or a Certificate of Achievement.

Course Overview

Certificates of Completion

These certificates are ideal if you are interested in starting a career within the wool industry, or simply seeking a skill refresh.

You will gain access to video-based learning modules and receive your Certification of Completion once you have viewed all videos in each course curriculum.

There are three Certificates of Completion to choose from:

  • Wool Handling - Fundamentals
  • Wool Handling - Short Wool
  • Wool Handling - Full Wool


Certificates of Achievement

These certificates offer a more comprehensive range of learning materials. In addition to the video-based learning modules, you will gain access to informative PDF’s and a series of quizzes to put your knowledge to the test.

You will receive your Certificate of Achievement once you have viewed all videos in the course curriculum and successfully completed the Q&A’s.

There are three Certificates of Achievement to choose from:

Meet Carmen Smith

Head Trainer


Having started her working life as a shepherd, Carmen moved into the wool sheds and has never looked back. She brings over 25 years of knowledge and expertise to WOMOlife. Carmen is a shearer, wool handler and presser and has worked in sheds all over the world. She also loves to compete and has a couple of trophies to show for it. Along with her partner Gavin and four children, they run their 340 ha sheep and beef farm in Waipukarau.

How much does this cost?

Pricing for our online courses start from $99 NZD. The cost will depend on which type of course you choose - a Certificate of Completion or Achievement.

What will I gain from the course?

In addition to real-world skills and knowledge, WOMOlife will issue you with a certificate once you complete your course. You can show this to a potential employer or your current employer as evidence of learning. Completing courses allows you to demonstrate learning before or during the early stages of your career.

What resources will I have access to after I finish my course?

Your WOMOlife login will be valid for one year. During this time you will have unlimited access to revisit course material, even after you have completed your course.

How does it work?

Each course is designed to track progress in your learning modules.  Once you have completed all your modules, we automatically issue the relevant certificate. With our longer courses we also track workshops and assessments that are built into the course.
